Technical interviews in English as a non-native: 8 tips
How to close US offers as a LATAM B1-B2 speaker. Vocabulary, pace, cultural fit.
English shouldn't gate your career. If the technical chops are there, the 8 tips below close the cultural and linguistic gap that often decides the offer.
1. Native vocabulary, not literal translation
Say 'idempotency', not 'idempotencia'. 'Trade-offs', not 'compensaciones'. 'Stakeholders', not 'partes interesadas'. Literal translation sounds borrowed — native vocabulary sounds expert.
2. Slow pace beats fast
Speak slower than you think you need to. It sounds thoughtful, not unsure. Pauses are fine — even native senior engineers pause to think.
3. Transition phrases
Learn 10 phrases that buy time and sound professional: 'That's a great question, let me think...', 'There are a few ways to approach this...', 'Walking through my reasoning...'. Sounds natural and buys 3-5 seconds.
4. STAR in English
Situation, Task, Action, Result in order with direct vocabulary. Avoid over-apologizing: 'I think maybe I could possibly' sounds unsure. Use 'I owned X', 'I delivered Y', 'I led Z'.
5. US cultural fit: directness
In LATAM we're diplomatic. In US tech, directness is value. 'I disagree with that approach because...' is respected, not rude. 'I think we should consider' sounds indecisive.
6. Ownership vocabulary
Use 'I' more than 'we'. 'I built the dashboard' > 'we built the dashboard'. The interviewer needs to know YOUR specific role. If it was a team, say 'I led the team of 4 to build...'.
7. Metrics with US anchors
Convert metrics to US references: '$2M ARR' lands harder than '\$2M in annual revenue'. Use US standards (DAU, MAU, ARR, MRR) over translations.
8. Comp negotiation in USD
Research levels.fyi, blind, glassdoor. Talk in total USD (base + bonus + equity). LATAM remote? Consider 70-90% of US comp as a realistic benchmark. You don't bump the offer if you don't ask.
