Negotiate tech salary in USD from LATAM (2026 guide)
How to lift your initial offer 15-40% using levels.fyi, comp components, and proven tactics.
You closed the loop, they call with an offer. But the initial offer is almost never the ceiling. Here's the framework to lift your comp 15-40% as LATAM remote or US.
Research BEFORE the offer
Levels.fyi for FAANG/MAANG and unicorns. Blind for detailed anecdotes. Glassdoor for mid-market. Note p50, p75, p90 for your level and company. Your target is p75 minimum.
US tech comp components
Base (40-60%): negotiable. Sign-on bonus (one-time): very negotiable, zero recurring cost to the company. Annual bonus (10-20% base): sometimes flexible. RSU/equity (4-year vest, 1-year cliff): negotiable, especially refresher. Total comp = base + bonus + RSU/4.
Tactic 1: Competing offer (real or pipeline)
A competing offer raises your leverage 30%+. If you don't have a concrete offer, say: 'I'm in late stages with X and Y, expecting offers next week'. Don't lie, but keep the pipeline. Only mention similar-tier companies.
Tactic 2: Anchor high first
When asked your expectation, give a range with your p75 as the floor. 'Based on my research and the level, I'm targeting X to Y total comp'. Never give a specific number — always a range.
Tactic 3: Negotiate each component
If they refuse to raise base, ask for sign-on bonus (one-time). If they refuse both, ask for an RSU refresher. If all three are no, ask for extra vacation or equipment budget. Something almost always moves.
Tactic 4: Silence is your friend
When you get the verbal offer, say 'Thank you. I'd like 48 hours to review before responding.' Silence. Don't accept on the call. Many companies raise the offer when they see hesitation.
LATAM remote: 70-90% US comp is fair
If they offer 50% of US comp, negotiate. The realistic benchmark for LATAM remote is 70-90% of US comp for the same role. Companies like Coinbase, GitLab, and Automattic pay near-parity.
When to accept
Accept when: 1) Comp is within or above your p75. 2) You've negotiated at least one round and something moved. 3) You trust the company and manager. 4) Equity has growth potential (Series B+ with strong funding or pre-IPO).
Key takeaway
Every extra $5k of base negotiated equals $20k+ of RSU over 4 years. Negotiating well is the highest-ROI skill in your career. Darknote.ai helps you prep tactics and simulate the negotiation call.
